Naturopathic medicine is a comprehensive, prevention-based, and natural approach to improving health and treating illness. The primary goal of naturopathic medicine is to address the causes of illness, rather than simply treat or suppress symptoms. Naturopathic doctors see the patient as a whole person and recognize that disease is not always isolated to a physical cause. Thus, NDs consider the emotional, spiritual, mental and physical aspects of a person when diagnosing and developing a treatment plan.
First visits with a Naturopathic Doctor average one hour or more in length. The goal of a Naturopathic Doctor is to understand the patient and the factors that impact their life. The patients physical, mental, emotional and spiritual health is considered when consulting with the Naturopathic Doctor. A physical exam will be performed on either the first or second visit with emphasis on the patient's concerns. The Naturopathic Doctor may then suggest further specialized testing. With the patient's input, a personalized treatment plan will be proposed to help facilitate achieving their health goals.
Naturopathic Doctors are regulated by the College of Naturopaths of Ontario (CONO), and are part of the Regulated Health Practioners Act (RHPA), which regulates over 25 other health professions in the province, including physicians and nurses. ND's are required to follow the Colleges standards of practice and guidelines, and allow patients to make informed choices in their health. http://www.collegeofnaturopaths.on.ca
Naturopathic Doctors can be considered general practitioners of natural medicine; they are trained to treat ailments using clinical nutrition, acupuncture, botanical medicine, physical medicine, lifestyle counselling and homeopathy. Naturopathic medicine is regulated and licensed in Ontario. Homeopaths, on the other hand, are trained to practice in one discipline - homeopathy. So while a homeopath would prescribe a homeopathic therapy, a Naturopathic Doctor would use any of the approaches listed above, including homeopathy, in their treatments. In addition, homeopathy is not a regulated or licensed health profession in Ontario.
The Ontario Health Insurance Plan (OHIP) does not cover naturopathic services. However, health plans provided by your employer or private health plans may offer naturopathic medicine coverage. Patients can contact their employer or individual insurance agents to see if they are covered. If not, such coverage can often be included for a minimal fee.
